The endless hunt for the perfect sandal continoues every summer. If simplicity points out to perfection and even the word sandal has Hellenic origins, it should not come as a surprise that some of the very best are still made in Greece. Designed by Christina Martini, these beauties look like they were archeological finds, but they’ ve got that necessary modern twist that makes a woman want to rest her heels and go flat.

Greek mythology is a place filled with awesome (and arrogant) gods, strong (and daring) heroes and fabulous monsters. Those who have -almost literally- lost themselves in dusty books know that according to an Ancient Greek myth, all gods and goddesses had their sandals made on the island of Crete by a gifted sandal maker who enriched each pair with magical powers. Oh yes, he was famous for having made the flying sandals for Hermes (the messenger god), embellished with a golden wing buckle.

Born and raised in Greece, Christina Martini is a BA (Hons) graduate in Footwear Design and Product Development from the prestigious Cordwainers College (2000). She has previously worked as a shoe designer for Balenciaga (2008-2010), Louis Vuitton and Iris srl, but after giving birth to her first child she moved with her family to the island of Corfu in Greece.

Nikolas Minoglou on the other side, was born in London and raised in Greece. An MBA graduate from Babson College (USA), in 2006 returned to Athens and took over the family’s well established footwear business.

So it was only a matter of good timing that they would join forces. Christina and Nikolas’s love for Ancient Greece and its history combined with their individual technical skills naturally led to the creation of “Ancient Greek Sandals”, a fusion of time-honored tradition with Hellenic glamour.

Sartorially inspired by ancient Greek Gods and myths, pottery, jewellery, architecture and sculpture, the Ancient Greek Sandals are handmade locally (though not on Crete, but hell, no one should take myths seriously) by skilled craftsmen using traditional techniques that have existed for centuries. A raw yet feminine aesthetic distinguishes this new sandal brand. The chemical- free, natural tan leather ages beautifully with time and wear. And although they aren’t enriched by magical powers (a real pity that puts Science to shame, if you ask me), they surely make heads turn at the drop of a hat (or a witche’s stick whip).

Launched for Cruise 2012, they can be found in some of the best stores worldwide: Selfridges, Liberty, Dover Street Market and Matches in London, Le Bon Marche, Colette and Montaigne Market in Paris, 10 Corso Como in Milan, Barneys New York, Tomas Maier, Maxfield, Louis Boston and Alchemist in the USA, Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdales in Dubai, Joyce in Hong Kong, Club 21 in Singapore, Restir and Edition in Japan, Luisa via Roma and Net-a-Porter online.
