We have decided to do the Impossible. Shoot (and edit) an entire fashion editorial by using a SONY Xperia Z1. And for this bold and brave mission, we recruited one of the best fashion photographers, Mara Desipris.

It all started with the new mission. We had to test the Sony Xperia Z1 cellphone. And then write about it. But this sounded too damn flat and boring. So we decided to take it up a notch. Or two. And go for the Impossible. To shoot  (and edit) an entire fashion editorial. With the Sony Xperia Z1. Only. No lights, no beauty dishes, no fat camera, no Photoshop afterwards. We therefore needed some five star help. To give this mission a real…shot, we recruited one of the best fashion photographers within Europe, Mara Desipris. And asked her to hold the Sony Xperia Z1, shoot and edit all images.

And she was bold enough to say “yes”. “Why the hell not”.

Besides, it was last autumn that Nick Knight formally announced his transition from Hasselblad to a smartphone, while the whole damn world praised Instagram and the furious application culture.

It is a new sense of freedom – literally the Swinging Sixties if you think about the movement a small, lighter camera enabled. The image capture device debate is both interesting and not interesting. I’m not that interested in the camera, more in the human engagement between oneself and the subject. What is really key is the person and what you are trying to convey about that person or get from them“, said Nick Knight in an interview he granted to AnOther magazine, last November.

And after wrap up, we had this strange epiphany. Photography was introduced as a people’s medium, but actually it wasn’t at the start. It involved expensive, fancy cameras not everyone could afford, let alone master or even understand. Now that everyone has a digital camera on his cellphone (an amazing democratisation of the medium, actually), there is judgement. That comes involved with imagery in that people think every image needs to be of “high resolution”. But imagery, as we prefer the word, is art. And art, luckily,  never really had to obey to any restrictions.

[By the way, the waterproof Sony Xperia Z1 is built with the very same components as Sony’s compact digital cameras, meaning it’s a great smartphone for capturing images. It combines a large 1/2.3″, 20.7 MP Exmor RS™ for mobile image sensor, Sony’s award-winning G Lens and intelligent BIONZ™ for mobile image-processing engine.]

Enough said. Welcome to a new era. Where everything is possible.
