The Parnassos Literary Society has followed a long, creative path and its history is inextricably intertwined with the history of modern Greece. Now it is hosting the contemporary art exhibition “Parnassos” (proudly presented by the Dada da Academy and the Wiener Art Foundation) that involves mostly young Greek artists with international careers and international artists living and working in Athens.
The Parnassos Literary Society was founded on June 24, 1865 in Athens and is the oldest literary society in mainland Greece. And yes, it continues to be active today. The club quickly became well-known, and functioned as a sort of Academy with literary, archaeological, legal, artistic and even scientific sections. It organized lectures, exhibitions, and various competitions. The club is now housed in a private mansion on the St. George Square designed by Ifikratis Kokkidis. The club has a valuable library and art gallery with 250 works by Greek artists.
Artistic creation, especially when innovation and uniqueness is set as a prerequisite, is like mountain climbing. It needs hazardous decisions, courage and risky initiatives. But as far as art is concerned, the climbing is endless, reaching no top. The conditions on the Greek territory are quite harsh indeed: poor funding, inadequate money circulation, incomplete state grants, general narrow-mindedness on the importance and promotion of art, particularly on the fresh forms of it and the present threaten of financial crisis.
Nevertheless, artistic production in Greece is thriving, receiving global recognition and the dimensions of a movement. Under this conception is the “Parnassos” exhibition set in a context full of juxtapositions and symbolisms.
The exhibition is to be hosted in the Parnassos Literary Society, so as to celebrate (for 3 years) the 150 year anniversary of the foundation’s birth, the place where the first art exhibition ever took place in Greece.
Stefan Bidner is the curator, Panos Papadopoulos the coordinator and DaDa Da Academy & Wiener Art Foundation the producers in association with Parnassos Literary Society and the “Friends of the Parnassos Literary Society” and with the support of the Austrian Embassy in Athens.
